Pros and cons of Concise Oxford Dictionary app for iPhone and iPad
Concise Oxford Dictionary app good for
Excellent material with audio and phonetic transcriptions! Gotta have it!
Some time ago, I had purchased and installed the Concise Oxford English Dictionary (COED) for my iPad. Everything was running smoothly for about six months up until today when I received notification of an update to the app: when I logged into the AppStore to update the program I had bought, it replaced my COED with the Cambridge Pocket Dictionary. There is something seriously wrong here! Apple, are you reading this -- I WANT MY CONCISE OXFORD ENGLISH DICTIONARY BACK!
The COED is an excellent in paper and good in app form. Id normally give the app a 4 star rating, but this update debacle is so bad that Im going to downgrade that score significantly.
Update: Today (October 14, 2013) I re-purchased the Oxford Concise English Dictionary from the AppStore. After being put on hold for half an hour by an Apple technician who cited "network problems" at their end for not being able to verify my purchase a few weeks agi, I just gave in today. Ive always been a fan if Oxford English dictionaries and this was simply a must-have. SMARTEN UP, APPLE!
Further update: This version is very streamlined and lives up to its name, and not only by employing the same corpus. The interface is most definitely improved over the previous versions, and the fat has been trimmed. Overall an excellent choice for anyone needing a well-researched dictionary either in app form or in print. So Ill upgrade my rating over last time, but just because its a world-class dictionary wrapped in a solid electronic shell – Im still very disappointed by the "upgrade" fiasco.
I love this app and use it nearly every day. The best feature is the ability to create a list of favourite words that you can keep coming back to. This has helped me to improve my vocabulary as I add words every time I come across a new one and then revisit them at a later date. I like to test myself on the definition of new words, which really helps me to learn them. My only suggestion to improve the app would be to add a tool that automatically sorts the favorites list into alphabetical order as dragging each word into place can take a while. This app is definitely worth paying for as its far superior to some of the free ones available in the store.
Some bad moments
The audio part of the app is not working. The support site is not reachable.
Just the thing I was looking for. Would be great if this comes with copy paste function to maintain ones own word list.
This is a "straight dictionary," as far as I can tell. I like its clarity. I like the definitions and how they are written. I find this dictionary very, very useful.
Its too bad, its not an oxford dictionary! Does it content audio? The answer is no because those are machine audio, not human.dont waste your money.
Twice Ive written a review of this book, only to have my work vanish because it is stated that the nickname is taken.
This is a book of marginal quality, such as might be found in the paperback section of a bus station, among the mysteries and romance novels. The publisher garners greater profits with the absence of publishing and distribution fees, but this is not reflected in the greater quality which could easily be found with the addition of a thesaurus, and the addition of examples of the usage of the words in sentences. There are few references to alternate words which could be employed in the same usage.
This is a book which is marginally usable for the most basic writing, but I would not recommend this for someone who was attempting to create a work which shows some depth of command of the English language.
The pronunciation is difficult to understand, needs an improvement. Please, update it.
